Important Information for Patterson Residents!
No need to do anything different when it comes to garbage, recycling and yard trimmings. The City of Patterson's Residential Garbage & Recycling Program is compliant with SB 1383 because organics are already composted. Just remember that food and food-soiled items belong in the garbage and not in Green Organics Bin. Keep organic material out of your Blue Recycling Bin. Remember that is placed in the Regular Black Trash Bin that does not belong in the green or blue bins ends up in the County landfill plant located on Fink Road. Click here for 3-Bin Recycling Guide.
What is SB 1383?
California has implemented statewide organic waste recycling and surplus food recovery in 2022 to reduce emissions of methane from food and organic waste in landfills. Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gasses and a major contributor to climate change. Landfills are the third-largest source of methane in California, emitting 20% of the state’s methane. Organics like food scraps, yard trimmings, paper and cardboard make up half of what Californians dump in landfills.
This new strategy is part of California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Law, also known as SB 1383. The law also aims to reduce food insecurity by ensuring more surplus food reaches people in need instead of being thrown away.
SB 1383 requires the state to:
- Reduce organic waste disposal 75% by 2025.
- Rescue at least 20% of currently disposed surplus edible food by 2025.
